History

  • Fever

  • eight gain

  • Vomiting

  • Stools

  • Atopic conditions

  • Rashes

  • Wheeze

Examination

  • PEWS Score, including temperature

  • Weighing the baby and plotting the weight in the red bool

  • Top to toe examination

Red flags

  • Faltering growth

  • Fever

  • Vomiting (as opposed to posseting)

  • Blood in stools

  • Abnormal findings on examination (e.g. red eye, abdominal tenderness or mass, bruising and/or bone deformity)

Differential Diagnosis

  1. Infantile Colic- reassurance, lactase drops, comfort milk- no single treatment has shown to be of significant benefit

  2. GORD

  3. UTI

  4. Otitis media

  5. Pharyngitis

  6. Corneal abrasion (usually caused by the baby’s own fingernail)

  7. Serious causes not to miss

  • Meningitis

  • Testicular torsion

  • Intussusception

  • Pyloric stenosis

  • Trauma including non-accidental injury
